For Parents.

Are you a parent in the Knoxville community? Here at the Social Perception and Cognition Lab, we study how people learn about the world around them.  This includes kids! We want to understand kids' ability to perceive others' emotion and nonverbal behavior (e.g., gestures).  We study their learning process by playing games, writing stories, and answering surveys with them.  If you have a child between the ages of 4 and 11 who would be interested in being a kid expert in one of our studies, please contact us to be included in future research studies.  We would love to hear from you!  You can use the links to the right to answer more of your questions.

What to Expect

During the studies, children will work one-on-one with an experimenter to play games, write stories, and answer questions for us.  Studies generally take about 60 minutes during which time we invite you as the parent to help us by answering a few questionnaires about your child.  As a thank you, we let your child select a toy to take home with them!

How long is the study?

Studies generally take between 45 and 60 minutes once in the lab.

What age ranges do we need?

We welcome kids of all ages to sign up, but we often focus on kids between the ages of 5 and 11.  If your children are in that age range or close to it, please fill out the contact information below so that we can keep you in mind for future studies!

Where do I wait while my child is participating?

We have a waiting area in the lab for you to relax.  If you will be bringing any other children with you, we have plenty of toys, board games, and books for them to play with.

Please email the PI of the lab, Dr. Sarah Lamer, with any other questions: slamer@utk.edu
